With an espresso machine you control grind size, dose and shot time yourself. That means even roasts that would taste sour in a bean to cup machine can work – provided your grinder grinds fine enough. Light roasts carry the note “Light roast: needs a fine grinder and patience when dialling in”. They can taste very sweet and fruity, but they are less forgiving. Tips for espresso machines

Keep the dose and the amount of espresso fixed, and adjust only the grind at first. Change one thing at a time.
If the shot runs fast and tastes sour, grind finer. If it runs slowly and tastes bitter, grind coarser.
Light roasts usually need a finer grind and a higher temperature than dark ones. Allow extra beans for dialling in.
Scales help more than any recipe: if you weigh the coffee going in and the espresso coming out, you can trace what went wrong.
Many roasters give a recipe on their product page. It's a good starting point for your machine.
