About Bean Index
Speciality coffee from UK roasters, side by side – with the source of every detail.
What is Bean Index?
Bean Index is an independent catalogue of speciality coffee sold by roasters in the UK. Once a day we read the public product data in the roasters' own online shops and put the details next to each other: origin, process, variety, altitude, flavour notes and the price per kg. When a coffee you liked sells out, the replacement finder suggests coffees with a similar profile.
At the moment Bean Index lists 111 roasters with 1,510 coffees on sale (checked 19 Oct 2026). That is a growing selection, not a complete list of UK roasters.
No listing is for sale
No roaster can pay for a place in a list, a better position in the catalogue or a mention in a guide. The order follows published rules that are the same for every roaster: how we sort. There are no ads, no cookies and no paid placements; what pays for Bean Index is on How we are funded.
Who runs Bean Index?
Bean Index is run by Yevhen Polishchuk. It is an independent project: no roaster, retailer or machine manufacturer has a stake in it. You can reach us at hello@beanindex.coffee.
How do we use AI?
Texts, analyses and illustrations on Bean Index are made with the help of AI. The person who runs Bean Index checks them, in part using a translation. Details that AI has read from roasters' descriptions – such as flavour notes, variety, altitude, roast level or the brew methods a roaster recommends – are labelled “AI” on every coffee. Prices, pack sizes and availability always come straight from the shop, never from AI. Which fields AI may fill, and when it may not, is in the methodology.
How does it work?
- Checked daily. Every price shows when we last checked it in the roaster's shop.
- With a source. Every detail says where it comes from. If a roaster doesn't state something, we write “not stated by the roaster” – we don't guess.
- Open. Formulas, weights and sorting rules are in the methodology. Corrections are listed publicly.
- No tracking. No cookies, no analytics scripts, no content from other servers. Details are in our privacy notice.
Are you a roaster?
Listing is free. You can confirm or correct the details about your coffees, name a successor for a sold-out coffee, or ask us to remove your roastery – we usually do that within 48 hours. Everything is on For roasters.
BeanIndexBot
Our crawler says who it is. Its user agent is:
BeanIndexBot/0.1 (+https://beanindex.coffee/about/#bot; independent speciality coffee catalogue)
- What it reads. Only public pages of roasters' own shops: the shop system's public product data (name, description, labelled fields, variants, price, weight, availability), the product page of a coffee whose listing lacks key details, the shop's delivery and FAQ pages, robots.txt and the signals described below. No accounts, no baskets, no checkout.
- robots.txt. The bot reads robots.txt with its own user agent and follows it: if robots.txt disallows the product data, we don't fetch the shop. Between two requests it waits at least 1.5 seconds, longer if robots.txt sets a crawl delay (we honour up to 60 seconds).
- AI and text and data mining. About every 30 days we check each shop for machine-readable reservations against text and data mining or AI use: a
tdmrep.jsonfile, atdm-reservationmeta tag or header, noaiin the robots meta tag or header,Disallow: /for a named AI crawler such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot, or a Content-Signal withai-train=noorai-input=no. If we find one, that roaster's descriptions are not passed to an AI model, and nothing an AI read from them earlier is shown. - No workarounds. We don't get past bot protection, logins or challenges.
- To stop it. Add
User-agent: BeanIndexBotwithDisallow: /to your robots.txt, or write to hello@beanindex.coffee. Blocking the bot stops new checks; if you also want your coffees taken off Bean Index straight away, say so in the e-mail.
What Bean Index is not
Not a shop: you order from the roaster, at the price in their shop. Not a test: we don't taste, score or rank coffees. And not a financial index: Bean Index has nothing to do with shares, commodities or coffee futures. “Index” here means a catalogue – and our monthly price index, which summarises the prices per kg of coffee on sale in UK roasters' shops.

Questions, tips, a roaster we're missing: hello@beanindex.coffee. If a detail on a coffee is wrong, the quickest way is “Report an error” on its page.
