Your roastery on Bean Index

Bean Index shows speciality coffee from the shops of UK roasters, with price per kg, origin and flavour notes side by side. We sell nothing: every coffee page takes buyers with “To roaster” straight to your product page, where they order from you. This page explains what we read from your shop and what you can decide yourself.

What do we read from your shop?

Once a day our program fetches your shop's public product data: product name, description, labelled fields, variants, price, weight and availability. For Shopify and WooCommerce we use the shop system's public product data, not your individual pages.

  • Our program identifies itself as BeanIndexBot and follows your robots.txt. If it disallows the product data, we don't fetch your shop. Details about the bot: BeanIndexBot.
  • Between two requests it waits at least 1.5 seconds, longer – up to 60 seconds – if your robots.txt asks for a longer crawl delay.
  • If a coffee's listing lacks key details, we also read its product page, at most once every 30 days. Your delivery and FAQ pages we read about once every 7 days for “Delivery & freshness” on your roaster page.
  • If your site reserves text and data mining or AI use in machine-readable form (for example tdmrep.json, noai or a robots.txt block for AI crawlers), we don't pass your descriptions to an AI model.
  • We don't copy your texts, photos or logo. We show individual details such as origin, process, variety, altitude and flavour notes, each with its source. We show photos or your logo only with your written consent.
  • Links to your shop carry the parameter “utm_source=beanindex”, so you can see in your own analytics how many visits come from us.

How do we show your coffees?

Every price is shown with the price per kg, the note “excl. delivery” and the time we last saw it in your shop. If we can't reach your shop for more than 48 hours, we hide the price. The price position places a coffee only against similar coffees, with the median and size of the comparison group. We don't use judging words such as “cheap” or “expensive”.

The order of our lists follows how complete the details are, and roasters take turns every day. There are no paid places, and there won't be. The rules are public in the methodology.

When a coffee sells out, its page stays for 90 days and shows similar coffees – first from your own range, then from other roasters.

From the prices we publish only aggregated figures each month – medians and ranges by origin and process, without names of roasters or coffees – under the CC BY 4.0 licence. A removal takes effect from the next edition; published editions stay unchanged, because no roaster can be identified in them. The rules are in the methodology.

What can you do, free of charge?

  • See what we have read. Your roaster page on Bean Index links to “Which details we have read”: for every field, how many of your coffees have it and how many of those details AI read.
  • Confirm details. If the details about your coffees are right, tell us: on your roaster page, “Confirm details” opens a prepared e-mail. Confirmed details then carry the label “confirmed”.
  • Correct details. If a country, process or variety has been misread, write to us. The correction appears with the label “corrected” on the coffee and in the public list of corrections in the methodology.
  • Add details. Altitude, variety, roast level or the recommended brew method missing? The most reliable way is a labelled field in your shop, which we read every time. You can also send us the details by e-mail.
  • Name a successor. If a new coffee replaces a sold-out one, we forward the old page straight to the new one.
  • Have your roastery removed. Write to us from an e-mail address on your shop's domain. We stop fetching your shop and take your pages off Bean Index, usually within 48 hours. With the next nightly update we tell search engines about the removal. We have no control over copies in search engines, feed readers or web archives (such as archive.org).

For all of this, an e-mail to hello@beanindex.coffee is enough. Please give the name of your roastery and, if it's about a particular coffee, the link to its page on Bean Index.

We don't contact roasters unprompted and don't send marketing e-mails. Contact always starts with you.

A badge for your website

If you like, you can show on your website that your coffees are listed on Bean Index:

Listed on Bean IndexBean Indexlisted · beanindex.coffee Listed on Bean IndexBean Indexlisted · beanindex.coffee

The badge is optional and free. It has no effect on listing, order or presentation on Bean Index. Whether you link it with nofollow, and where you put it, is up to you – it doesn't have to go in the footer.

  • As a file: bean-index-listed-light.svg, bean-index-listed-dark.svg (SVG, light and dark).
  • As HTML code: the image is inside the code itself, your page loads nothing from our server, and we count nothing. In the code, replace /roaster/YOUR-ROASTERY/ with the address of your roaster page on Bean Index.

The roaster report

We are preparing a paid monthly report for roasters, with analyses you don't otherwise have: how your prices per kg compare with the median of comparable coffees, how your prices changed over the past month, how your range compares with the market (without naming other roasters), and how complete your details are. Visit counts are not part of it – you already see those free of charge in your own analytics. This is what it would look like, with invented coffees and real medians: sample report. The report will have no influence on order, selection or presentation, and correcting, adding or removing details stays free.

No paid placement

No listing is for sale. Whether a roaster uses the report, has an affiliate programme or has never written to us makes no difference to any formula. How Bean Index is funded: How we are funded.

Is your roastery missing?

We list UK roasters with their own online shop for coffee beans, as long as their robots.txt allows us to fetch the product data. Send us your shop's address; we'll let you know once your coffees are on Bean Index.
